Thank you so much for the wonderful opportunity this competition gave to many deserving charitable organizations. We had a platform to tell the rest of the US and Canada about the valuable contributions we make every day to our local communities. Also, by networking and spreading the word about collecting votes, we informed countless more people... See More about the work we're doing. As fund raising chairman for The Literacy Council of Kingsport, I can assure you that these funds are very welcome in these difficult financial times. And to put the "icing" on it all, I've found some new favorite chips - Salsa Fresca.

Hello,
The dedication of the volunteers and the students at LCK is inspiring. I worked with a student who walked 20 miles each way to meet with his tutors. I am not exaggerating. Can you imagine the determination it takes to make that kind of effort? Imagine wanting to read, to change your life so badly that you are willing to walk walking that distance in the heat of the summer. This student was an inspiration not only to me, but to the other students and to his family and friends. Speaking to other volunteers, all students enrolled in LCK have similar stories. They are working parents, single individuals, grandparents etc. who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. As with all non profits LCK depends on benefactors from the community; businesses and individuals who provide books, computers and volunteer their time. Thank you for making LCK a Semi-Finalist!

Let me tell you about a few of our students in our English as a Second Oral Language program. In the past 12 months, we helped four adults improve their reading and writing skills as they studied US History and prepared for their Citizenship interview/test in Memphis, TN. With one-on-one volunteer tutors providing instruction and encouragement, all four passed their interviews/tests and look forward to being sworn in as new U. S. Citizens! With the winning of the "People's Choice" award, we could offer this help to more ESOL immigrants through purchase of citizenship books, software to improve English conversational skills, and computer skills. Our materials and services are provided FREE, meaning that we depend on the goodness of our donors, grantors, and the businesses in the Kingsport community.

I am an adult tutor for Literacy Council of Kingsport. I work with a 68 year old woman who dropped out of school in ninth grade because she couldn't read. She works very hard to learn now what she didn't learn 55 years ago. Phyllis has worked as a housekeeper cleaning houses and now wants to read the Bible, her prescriptions, and information to control her diabetes. Your help would be very much appreciated by Phyllis and by me, her tutor. Thank you!

Thank you for voting to allow the Literacy Council of Kingport be a finalist. I've been involved with the Literacy Council for a number of years. It is the most rewarding volunteer work I've ever done. I can personally attest to the tremendous good it does for adults. One in particular, learned to read well enough to get his own Library Card. How very proud he was that day. Completed the paper work himself...I just stood beside him like a proud mother would. Frustrating as it was at times (for the both of us), the improvement shown on test scores kept him going. Thanks again for making the Literacy Council of Kingsport a finalist.

all these charities are worth the price i personally welcome callers, trained and selected candidates and people at toronto's distress centre (phone help line for suicide prevention) from 1995 until 1997.
BUT the best use of the price would be a world fit for kids... with a great solid frame to sustain and contain and an ajusted morale, a nurtured conscience with love and warmth would sprout great individuals with a conscience to do good, serve others feel useful and respect all that is living...

best of luck to all projects,
