Wednesday, March 24th, 2010Warm Fuzzies! riceworks® Welcomes “Good News Bears” to Show Us Your Goodness.
Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010What a wonderful surprise today to receive a note from Jeanie H. who nominated her “Good News Bears” charity fundraiser of Livermore California to the Show Us Your Goodness program.
As Jeanie writes, “Teddy bears rank high on the list in bringing smiles and “warm fuzzies” to the injured child, the lonely, and the needy of all ages. Medical experts, paramedics, police officers, and firemen around the world will testify to the healing and comforting power these stuffed animals possess.”
How true!
Last year, over 11,300 critters were given for “stuffed love.” Good News Bears is an all-volunteer effort that survive on grants, fundraisers, and donations. Check out the site, you can see how much joy emanates from the caring volunteers. www.goodnewsbears.org

riceworks® Salutes and Welcomes “Paralyzed Veterans Of America” to Show Us Your Goodness.
Monday, February 1st, 2010Today we received a brief but touching note from John K. who took the time to nominate his favorite cause, “Paralyzed Veterans Of America.” John writes that this charity “helps get our men and women veterans back into the mainstream of life after spinal injuries suffered from combat or other types of damage. The organization also works on research for the cause and cure of this and many other types of spine, neck and head injuries.”
A great cause, indeed!
Based oh John’s recommendation, I checked out the PVA website. It’s quite inspiring and does an excellent job to showcase the wonderful work of the foundation in helping disabled and paralyzed veterans with spinal chord injury and disease. Check it out. www.PVA.org
John, thank you for your nomination.

riceworks® Welcomes The Las Vegas Natural History Museum to Show Us Your Goodness.
Saturday, January 30th, 2010Not all the nominations we receive come from health and illness-based charities. Many of the nominations come non-profits that are social and education-based, and their stories are equally uplifting to hear and read about. And support.
One such non-profit nomination came from Stefanie S. who wrote and spoke about (via a Podcast) the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. This is a private, non-profit institution dedicated to educating children and families in the natural sciences. Through its interactive exhibits, educational programs and the preservation of its collections, the Museum strives to instill an understanding and appreciation of the world’s wildlife, ecosystems and cultures.
BTW, check out the museum’s prehistoric gallery, with the 35-foot long Tyrannosaurus rex that lowers its head and roars at you. Scary!
Thank you, Stefanie, for your nomination and your interview. The next time I’m in Los Vegas, I’ll pop in for a visit to see your fabulous museum. Check it out, folks. www.lvnhm.org

Today, 23 nominations! riceworks® welcomes Children’s Haven International, Inc. a children’s charity also known as Refugio Internacional de Ninos, A.C.
Friday, January 29th, 2010I love getting notes from people about their charities and then checking out the charity websites to see why that person is so passionate about their association with that cause. Among the nominations received today, one came from Beverley B., who wrote about Children’s Haven International, a foundation that provides a loving family-style home for needy and orphaned children in Mexico.
As Beverly writes: “With the help of thousands of volunteers from all over Canada and the U.S., for over 30 years CHI has been a loving home for more than 1000 children who would otherwise have been on the streets. For as long as a child needs a home and is willing to stay in school, this is THEIR family.
Beverly ended her note by saying, “CHI’s children were my life as I worked with CHI for over 20 years.”
Wow, that’s dedication and passion, Beverley, and thank you for sharing.

A Touching Story: Today riceworks® welcomes Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) to Show Us Your Goodness
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010Some letters are so powerful. Today we received a touching, well-written note from Lauren D. who wrote in to nominate the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO). This foundation ensures that children with cancer in Ontario are given equal access to state-of-the-art cancer care—no matter where they live.
Lauren writes about her personal experience: “I was only five days at my new high school when I began to experience tightness in my chest, and discomfort in my groin, similar to growing pains. Five days later, my family doctor performed some tests and within the hour I was transported to the hospital where I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. That was September 13, 2005. It was a Tuesday. I was 15.”
Lauren goes on to describe how POGO provides financial assistance program “to help families like mine with costs like lodging, babysitting for siblings, and food.”
Lauren ends her note: “I am now in full remission. I am honored to be able to nominate POGO for this award for all the wonderful work they do to help children and teens with cancer and their families.”
Thank you Lauren for such a positive, heart-warming story. Keep strong. We wish you well on the road ahead.

riceworks® Welcomes “The Kylie Jane Long Foundation” to Show Us Your Goodness.
Monday, January 25th, 2010In looking at the many charity nominations coming our way, I’m struck by how many stories come from individuals who are personally affected by a situation or event, which in turn is often the inspiration behind the creation of a charity or cause.
Today I came across a note from Amy C. who nominated The Kylie Jane Long Foundation of Akron, Ohio. Amy writes, “This charity was created by my brother and sister-in-law in memory of my late niece Kylie. Every year they have events, such as “Hope on the Slopes” to raise money for area pediatric cancer patients and to raise awareness of different types of rare pediatric cancers.”
We all know someone affected by cancer. Thank you Amy, for sharing your personal story.
